Mesin Bubut adalah suatu Mesin perkakas yang digunakan untuk memotong benda yang diputar. Bubut sendiri merupakan suatu proses pemakanan benda kerja yang sayatannya dilakukan dengan cara memutar benda kerja kemudian dikenakan pada pahat yang digerakkan secara translasi sejajar dengan sumbu putar dari benda kerja. Gerakan putar dari benda kerja disebut gerak potong relatif dan gerakkan translasi dari pahat disebut gerak umpan.
Dengan mengatur perbandingan kecepatan rotasi benda kerja dan kecepatan translasi pahat maka akan diperoleh berbagai macam ulir dengan ukuran kisar yang berbeda. Hal ini dapat dilakukan dengan jalan menukar roda gigi translasi yang menghubungkan poros spindel dengan poros ulir.
Roda gigi penukar disediakan secara khusus untuk memenuhi keperluan pembuatan ulir. Jumlah gigi pada masing-masing roda gigi penukar bervariasi besarnya mulai dari jumlah 15 sampai dengan jumlah gigi maksimum 127. Roda gigi penukar dengan jumlah 127 mempunyai kekhususan karena digunakan untuk konversi dari ulir metrik ke ulir inci.

Poros spindel akan memutar benda kerja melalui piringan pembawa sehingga memutar roda gigi pada poros spindel. Melalui roda gigi penghubung, putaran akan disampaikan ke roda gigi poros ulir. Oleh klem berulir, putaran poros ulir tersebut diubah menjadi gerak translasi pada eretan yang membawa pahat. Akibatnya pada benda kerja akan terjadi sayatan yang berbentuk ulir.

Bagian-bagian mesin bubut

Mesin bubut terdiri dari meja dan kepala tetap. Di dalam kepala tetap terdapat roda-roda gigi transmisi penukar putaran yang akan memutar poros spindel. Poros spindel akan menmutar benda kerja melalui cekal. Eretan utama akan bergerak sepanjang meja sambil membawa eretan lintang dan eretan atas dan dudukan pahat. Sumber utama dari semua gerakkan tersebut berasal dari motor listrik untuk memutar pulley melalui sabuk.

1. Pisau bubut rata kanan

Pahat bubut rata kanan memilki sudut baji 80º dan sudut-sudut bebas lainnya sebagaimana gambar,dan pembubutan uini dimulai dari kiri ke kanan mendekati cekam bubut.

2. Pisau bubut rata kiri

Sudut baji rata kiri sebesar 55º, dan biasanya digunakan unutk pembubutan yang dimulai dari kiri ke kanan mendekati kepala lepas.

3. Pisau bubut muka

Pahat bubut muka memiliki sudut baji 55, pahat ini bisa digunakan baik dari kanan maupun kiri benda kerja.

4. Pisau bubut ulir

Pahat bubut ulir memilki sudut puncak tergantung dari jenis ulir yang akan dibuat, sudut puncak 55° adalah untuk membuat ulir jenis whitwhort. Sedangkan untuk pembuatan ulir jenis metrik sudut puncak pahat ulirnya dibuat 60°.

Dalam Bahasa Indonesia bisa jadi baja berkecepatan tinggi. Tapi apa sih sebenarnya HSS itu? Menurut Wiki,

High speed steel (HSS or HS) is a subset of tool steels, usually used in tool bits and cutting tools. It is often used in power saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to the older high carbon steel tools used extensively through the 1940s in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high speed steel. At room temperature, in their generally recommended heat treatment, HSS grades generally display high hardness (above HRC60) and a high abrasion resistance (generally linked to tungsten content often used in HSS) compared to common carbon and tool steels.

The main use of high speed steels continues to be in the manufacture of various cutting tools: drills, taps, milling cutters, tool bits, gear cutters, saw blades, etc., although usage for punches and dies is increasing.

High speed steels also found a market in fine hand tools where their relatively good toughness at high hardness, coupled with high abrasion resistance and fine, made them suitable for low speed applications requiring a durable keen (sharp) edge, such as files, chisels, hand plane blades, and high quality kitchen, pocket knives, and swords.

 Tungsten carbide (WC) is an inorganic chemical compound containing equal parts of tungsten and carbon atoms. Colloquially, tungsten carbide is often simply called carbide. In its most basic form, it is a fine gray powder, but it can be pressed and formed into shapes for use in industrial machinery, tools, abrasives, as well as jewelry. Tungsten carbide is approximately three times stiffer than steel, with a Young's modulus of approximately 550 GPa, and is much denser than steel or titanium. It is comparable with corundum (α-Al2O3) or sapphire in hardness and can only be polished and finished with abrasives of superior hardness such as silicon carbide, cubic boron nitride and diamond amongst others, in the form of powder, wheels, and compounds.

Jadi Jenis pahat ini dibuat dengan campuran bahan kimia antara lain tungsten dan karbon,tergantung sifat bahan yang dikehendaki. Kadang juga memakai methanol,hydrofluoric acid/nitric acid (HF/HNO₃),dll. Rumit sangat....... :D

Tungsten carbide bit ini kemudian dicetak dengan beragam bentuk pahat bubut. Ada yang dibuat dengan lubang di tengahnya untuk baut pengunci ke holder/pegangannya,sepert gambar di bawah ini.

Namun yang banyak dan gampang dijumpai dipasaran disini adalah yang tidak memakai holder sehingga dalam aplikasinya kita mengelas bit ini ke tangkainya dengan kawat kuningan.
